Korean shipbuilders move further ahead of China for LNG newbuilds but Chinese still lead on overall vessel types
South Korean shipbuilders, the global leaders in the construction of liquefied natural gas carriers, ranked second in 2023 in terms of new global orders for all types of vessels for a third straight year, though increased their share of the LNG newbuilds market.

Qatar Petroleum has ordered four new liquefied natural gas carriers from the Chinese Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding Group of Shanghai as it begins to put in place the shipping requirements for massive expansion plans.
LNG carriers on order
Feb 14 (LNGJ) - BW Group, the Singapore-based energy shipping and platforms company, has ordered two LNG carriers from South Korean shipyard Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering. The two vessels with capacities of 173,000 cubic metres will each cost around US$190 million and be delivered in the first half of 2020. BW currently has 16 LNG carriers on the water and five others on order in Korea. Of the 21 vessels, 18 of them are conventional LNG carriers while three are floating storage and regasification units.
