Japanese liquefied natural gas imports dropped by just over 8 percent in 2023 to a 14-year low as more nuclear, renewables and high levels of coal were used and the nation was again overtaken by China as the world’s No. 1 LNG importer.
May 19 (LNGJ) - Chinese LNG imports in April 2023 rose by 10 percent to 4.77 million tonnes compared with 4.34MT in April 2022, according to China’s General Administration of Customs.
Analysts noted that the increase was from an already low base as the April 2022 deliveries took place during Covid-19 lockdowns in large cities like Shanghai when economic and industrial activity were curbed along with fuel demand. The Chinese LNG deliveries in April 2022 had also been the lowest total for more than two years.
Chinese liquefied natural gas imports dropped by almost 12 percent in January and February compared with the same period of 2022.
Chinese liquefied natural gas imports in August 2022 to its network of 22 regasification terminals tumbled by 29 percent because of a mixed economic recovery, high spot prices and more pipeline natural gas imports.
Chinese liquefied natural gas imports rose year-on-year by 4.2 percent last month and over 18 percent in the year-to-date period, keeping the nation on track to be the world’s No. 1 LNG importer for 2021.
